4 Issues You'll Likely Have With Metal Roofing

March 11, 2022

Metal roofing is a reliable and well-coveted roofing material because it has a high corrosion resistance, it is lightweight, and it does not easily rust with acrylic or powder coating. Some metals also reflect the sun's rays, which can help to keep a building cool.

Metal roofing is expensive because it is a high-quality product. Consumers are willing to pay a higher price for these materials because they are more durable and offer better protection.

However, they can still possess the following problems.

Corrosion

High levels of humidity, heat and acid rain are all factors that can lead to metal roof corrosion. Using powder coating to prevent corrosion is a common solution. Powder coating is ideal for metal roofs because it is a much more durable material, and it can last up to two decades without needing to be repainted. This process also prevents rust from forming and is non-porous, so the entire roof can be water proofed.

Galvanizing is the best alternative to powder coating. for metal roofs because it can last up to five decades without needing to be repainted.

The paint is applied to the substrate using a sprayer and then dries in 60 seconds. The material is also electrostatic, so it adheres to the steel substrate with less effort than other types of paint.

Denting

Most often, hail is to blame for the dents seen in metal roofs. Previous roofer or homeowner steps for inspection or cleaning on metal roofs can cause dents too. Metal roofing dents are challenging to repair and require a skilled roofing professional. The most common way of fixing metal roofing dents is by using a pressurized air compressor and a metal roofing repair kit. These kits typically come with a variety of different tools to help you repair your metal roof.

Paint Resin Breakdown/Chalking

Paint resin breakdown causes chalk-like streaks on the roof. The most common causes of this are high temperatures, heavy rainfall, extended periods without proper cleaning, or exposure to harsh chemicals like bleach. When paint residue breaks down and turns into a powdery substance it can result in staining on the surface of your metal roofing material.

Overstressing/Oil Canning

Overstressing is when a metal roof is stressed on an area or two but not on a section that supports the overstressed area. This leads to the metal roof possibly tearing or cracking. This is also known as oil canning wherein a metal roof has been stressed to the point of bending and then returns back to its original position. This results in the metal roof having a depression where it bent.

There are two main ways to repair an overstressed metal roof:

1. If the metal roof is only stressed on one area, you can pull the one stressed section out of place and weld a new piece in its place.

2. If there are more than one areas that have been taken out of shape, then you will need to replace your entire roofing material.
