Learn Some Basic Roofing DIY Now That You're Stuck at Home

April 8, 2020

It's not an ideal time to learn some do-it-yourself roofing during this time of quarantine. However, it gives you plenty of free time on your hands to learn something and be productive while you're not doing some work. While we like the idea of learning, we're still against the idea of homeowners DIY-ing the biggest problems in their roof because of the inherent dangers and no guarantees of 100% success. These basic DIY lessons will help you get through the common issues of your roof that any homeowner has a high probability of success

Without further ado, here they are below.

How to Replace Asphalt Shingles

Right after a storm or a strong windstorm, your asphalt shingles can loosen or go missing. Homeowners with some DIY knowledge can replace missing roofing shingles when this happens. True enough, it involves heading up the roof, which is a lesson in itself. Using a ladder, ascend to your roof, leave your pry bar, hammer, utility knife, nails, and matching shingles on the roof surface. Then, exit the ladder, raise your arms to your sides, and find your balance. Doing this trains your body to adapt and balance itself on an uneven surface, such as a high-sloped roof.

Next, look for loosened asphalt shingles. You can choose to push them gently to see if they're loose. Curled shingles are indications of asphalt shingles that almost went missing after that storm. Remove these by gently raising the nails. Then, nail your new shingles using galvanized roofing nails. Repeat the same process for other asphalt shingles missing on your roof.

Conducting an Effective Asphalt Shingle Roof Inspection

Roof inspections allow you to determine areas of your roof that are damaged and are approaching critical damage. If you see massive discoloration on your gutter water, then it's likely your asphalt shingles have begun crumbling. Head to your roof and touch the surface of your asphalt shingles. If you feel powdery materials and sediments coming loose once you've moved them, it's an indication that your asphalt shingles are weakening and nearing the end of their lifespan.

To look for roof leaks, run your garden hose on the roof's different areas. In doing so, you can see even the smallest holes going through your attic. Have someone else reach into your attic. Then, have them observe if there are also the smallest droplets coming down from your underlayment to the attic floor.

Unfortunately, no DIY method exists to help you repair roof leaks efficiently. Doing this involves removing your asphalt shingle roof and replacing it after your Guelph roofers have replaced your roofing underlayment. Without proper equipment and knowledge, you can end up damaging your roof further than improving it.

In this light, it's best to use high-qualified Guelph roofers with decades of experience and knowledge in handling roof repairs and replacements.
